Fired Federal Workers Host Free Toy Exchange and Lunch
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Organizations Founded by Fired Federal Workers, wellfed. and 27 UNIHTED Host Free Holiday Toy Exchange and Lunch for Laid-Off Parents in DC on Friday Dec. 19
Washington, DC — December 19, 2025 — As families across the region feel the effects of federal layoffs and ongoing financial uncertainty acutely as the holidays draw near, wellfed. and 27 UNIHTED are coming together to offer a moment of relief, connection, and joy during the holiday season.
“This holiday season may be especially tough for many families with parents who have been laid off from their federal job, contractor position or another impacted role. This event is about restoring dignity, easing financial strain, and reminding parents that their community is here for them,” said Rebecca Ferguson-Ondrey from wellfed. “Sometimes something as simple as a shared meal or a new-to-you toy can make a real difference and ease the pressure laid off parents feel to make the holidays special for their kids while balancing a significantly reduced budget.”
The wellfed. Toy Exchange, taking place on Friday, December 19 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at The Capital Turnaround (700 M Street SE, Washington, DC), is a free, family-centered event designed specifically for laid-off parents and caregivers whose income has been disrupted.
Swap a toy. Spread some joy.
This holiday gathering will include:
A free used toy exchange, where families can donate unwrapped, gently used toys and shop for toys at no cost
Free lunch for all attendees
Free stocking stuffers for children
Access to Capital Area Food Bank resources for families in need
Families are encouraged to bring unwrapped, gently used toys to swap, though donations are welcome but not required to participate.
The event is hosted by wellfed., a social impact startup created directly in response to federal cuts and layoffs. Founded by former federal workers, wellfed. delivers human-centered career transition, financial education, and wellbeing programs that nourish and empower professionals navigating change. In a time of widespread uncertainty, wellfed. has become a trusted lifeline of consistency, care, and community, with a simple goal: helping people return to the workforce confident in their next chapter and truly wellfed in every possible way.
The event is co-hosted by 27 UNIHTED, an organization formed in early 2025 by former NIH workers to support others impacted by NIH layoffs. Together, the two organizations are creating space for families to feel supported, seen, and less alone during a season that can feel especially heavy.
