I appreciate this program because it supported our Phase I studies, provided the opportunity to rigorously test our hypothesis, and enabled progression to a Phase II project. NIH SBIR/STTR mechanisms are also critical for universities, as they foster academic–industry collaboration, accelerate translation of discoveries into practical applications, and help attract external investment and commercialization pathways that would otherwise be difficult to establish within an academic setting.

Last summer our Phase II proposal received an excellent impact score, yet we are still awaiting authorization to initiate this critical project. The delay is due to the current pause in NIH SBIR/STTR funding associated with the reauthorization process.
