Abby’s Story

Tell us about yourself and your science.

“Growing up in rural Africa, I never imagined that I would get to do such impactful research that I do now. My interest in improving human health was nurtured by my grandmother who showed me traditional medicines, and my father who was the only dentist in my village. I was fortunate to be awarded a scholarship to go to college in the United States, where I was introduced to research methods that are used to understand diseases and develop effective therapeutics. I am now doing research aimed at preserving the survival and improving the function of cells that make insulin in our bodies to prevent and treat diabetes, a disease that is a major global health challenge. I enjoy using cutting edge methods to uncover new knowledge on how these cells function, and how factors that contribute to diabetes alter these mechanisms. I also enjoy discussing with colleagues and training future young scientists.”

Your Emotional Journey.

“I was overjoyed to have been awarded a K99/R00 award because this award would significantly improve my chances of finding a faculty position. Such an opportunity helps me to fulfill my dream of contributing to our understanding of diabetes at a higher level, where I can lead a team in a focused research and train students. When the program was canceled, I felt my hope of attaining a faculty position waning. In these uncertain times, I am afraid of the future of science and my ability to contribute when the investment is limited. I think this will result in a net loss of knowledge and therapeutics that improve human health in the US and globally. The constant fear of losing funding has cost me my drive of solely focusing on the research. I find myself distracted, checking the news and wondering what will happen next.”

Your coping strategies.

“What brings me joy in this moment is the community of other scientists that has remained strong even in challenging times. Learning the history of the United States and the many challenges many people have overcome also gives me perspective on what is possible, and what the people united can accomplish to improve the life of their fellow citizens.”

Are there ways we can help others?

”I think sharing messages of solidarity may help others not give up on their dreams.”

Is there anything else you would like to share?

“It gives me hope to see people fighting back in every way they can. Thank you!
